The project “Peccato per il Colore” is an in-depth study of the circles of Hell in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, explored through the symbolic use of colors and their psychological dimension. Each infernal circle is represented according to the sin committed and the punishment described by Dante, with a specific focus on the role of color as an expressive and communicative tool.

Color becomes the guiding thread of each piece, associated with sin and its emotional and symbolic consequences. Each drawing is developed using techniques that vary depending on the circle, reflecting the nature of the punishment: from pastels on paper treated with coffee, creating dark and evocative atmospheres, to Bic pen on paper for a sharper and more precise rendering. This approach not only recalls literary themes but also seeks to evoke the emotional and psychological depth of the characters and situations.

The series includes five large-format drawings, accompanied by smaller color studies, each dedicated to a specific circle of Hell. Each piece becomes an exploration of a particular artistic technique and a chromatic choice that reflects the gravity of the sin and the severity of the punishment.

In my work, I explore human emotions, portraying subjects that seem suspended in dreamlike worlds where time is crystallized. In this project, I specifically investigate the relationship between color and emotions, drawing inspiration from Dante’s capital sins. I have taken cues from the heads of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, where grimaces and facial distortions represent a way to exorcize inner demons.

Color is thus at the heart of my research, which examines its effect on perception, mood, and its ability to communicate feelings. I question, for example, why red is associated with anger, which areas of the brain it stimulates, and how these associations are influenced by our culture.

My choice to draw inspiration from the Divine Comedy is linked both to my Italian roots and to the complexity and humanity of the characters described by Dante. These figures, often characterized by primal instincts and a propensity for sin, embody the wildest and most unrestrained aspects of the human soul.

Each circle represented in my drawings stands out for its particular attention to technique and symbolism, forming a project in itself that, as a whole, retraces Dante’s journey through Hell. This structure creates a visual narrative that intertwines symbols, emotions, and colors, like a matryoshka of interconnected worlds reflecting the poet’s inner journey.

Le projet “Peccato per il Colore” est une étude approfondie des cercles de l’Enfer dans La Divine Comédie de Dante Alighieri, explorée à travers l’utilisation symbolique des couleurs et leur dimension psychologique. Chaque cercle infernal est représenté en fonction du péché commis et du châtiment décrit par Dante, avec un accent particulier sur le rôle de la couleur en tant qu’outil expressif et communicatif.

La couleur devient le fil conducteur de chaque œuvre, associée au péché et à ses conséquences émotionnelles et symboliques. Chaque dessin est réalisé avec des techniques qui varient selon le cercle, reflétant la nature de la punition : des pastels sur papier traité avec du café, créant des atmosphères sombres et évocatrices, au stylo Bic sur papier pour un rendu plus précis et tranchant. Cette approche évoque non seulement les thèmes littéraires, mais cherche également à traduire la profondeur émotionnelle et psychologique des personnages et des situations.

La série comprend cinq dessins de grand format, accompagnés d’études chromatiques plus petites, chacun dédié à un cercle spécifique de l’Enfer. Chaque œuvre devient une exploration d’une technique artistique particulière et d’un choix chromatique qui reflète la gravité du péché et la sévérité de la punition.

Dans mon travail, j’explore les émotions humaines en représentant des sujets qui semblent suspendus dans des mondes oniriques où le temps est cristallisé. Dans ce projet, j’analyse plus particulièrement la relation entre la couleur et les émotions, en m’inspirant des péchés capitaux dantesques. J’ai notamment puisé des références dans les têtes de Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, où grimaces et déformations du visage incarnent une tentative d’exorciser les démons intérieurs.

La couleur est ainsi au cœur de ma recherche, interrogeant son effet sur la perception, l’humeur et sa capacité à communiquer des sentiments. Je me questionne, par exemple, sur les raisons pour lesquelles le rouge est associé à la colère, quelles zones du cerveau il stimule et comment ces associations sont influencées par notre culture.

Mon choix de m’inspirer de La Divine Comédie est lié à mes racines italiennes ainsi qu’à la complexité et l’humanité des personnages décrits par Dante. Ces figures, souvent guidées par des instincts primaires et une propension au péché, incarnent la part la plus sauvage et instinctive de l’âme humaine.

Chaque cercle représenté dans mes dessins se distingue par une attention particulière à la technique et au symbolisme, formant un projet autonome qui, dans son ensemble, retrace le voyage de Dante en Enfer. Cette structure crée une narration visuelle qui entrelace symboles, émotions et couleurs, à la manière d’une matriochka de mondes interconnectés, reflétant le voyage intérieur du poète.
